New Zealand Trip 2023 Day 5 Part 1 ~ Donut Island, Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway

Got up early as we planned for a 9am kayaking tour to Donut Island. We called to check the status and was asked to head down nevertheless. Unfortunately, the 9am slot was cancelled due to the wind direction and we decided to have breakfast first and try the second slot at 12pm.

Chose Little Latte cafe.

We had a relaxing breakfast since we had time to kill. We had some shortbread in room since we were prepared to kayak right away so we only had a light one.

We headed down again. But the rain was still pretty heavy and doesnt seem like it would stop. Was feeling disappointed so was surprised we could go ahead despite the rain! We ended up the only couple with a guide so felt like a private tour lol.

Way too busy kayaking so no photos in between, until we reached the donut island.

After we exit the Donut Island, the rain got heavier and made kayaking harder. Luckily we got boosted by our guide, which is probably only possible when we were the only ones!

Stopped by a beach for a little break.

And after this, we set off back to where we started. The rain got really heavy and we were really tattered by the time we were back lol.

Thankfully, the public toilets right at the beach were really clean and even had a Dyson hand dryer, which really helped to clean and dry ourselves.
I got a suntan line despite such a rainy day without seeing the sun.

After washing up, we continued our original plan to the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway.

The annoying thing here is that parts of the walkway is closed by there wasn't clear signs so we weren't sure where to walk.

The super long tunnel which we walked to the other end and turned back as not sure how far the walk is since we were already running late.

To be continued in the next post!
